This Urgent Prayer Request is from Joc and is an update of the escalating situation at St Bernard's High School. Thank you so much for your prayers for all concerned in this neighborhood crisis. God bless you and your families, Teri & Michael (see below)
Hi Michael,
Please let the Prayer Warriors know to continue to pray for the situation at St.B.H.S.
God Can Make A Way, Where There Is No Other Way! Amen!
FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO KNOW MORE READ ON:
The children at St. Bernard H.S., a predominantly African American school (Not that this has anything to do with this, this is F.Y.I. only) have done all that they were suppose to do. They did the right things. They went to school, got A's & B's, played sports, won championships. The football team specifically, was undefeated (10-0)! They were looking forward to scholarships and being scouted and the promised of be able to go to the college or university of there choice. This bright future they fear is now being taken from them unjustly.
To save the school from closure (a threat made by the Archdiocese a number of years ago) the principal used his rightful authority to award special scholarships for families in need. This helped get his attendance numbers up which is what he was instructed to do. The tuition amounts that they were offered and paid during this time when the school needed them to build their numbers was suddenly withdrawn about two weeks ago. Budget deficits were given as the reason for the sudden departure of the aid to the families. The principal with his hands tied is being thrown under the bus! A new Co-Principal was sent in and the students who supported the school when it needed it the most are now also being thrown under the bus!
Note: Students, the President of the Parent Organization an the entire Championship Football Team Coaching Staff have resigned!!!
Some parents who were having difficulties at the end of the school year were told by Archdiocese officials that they had to pay large amounts of disputed back tuition (money they did not have) in order for their children to take Final Exams. Some have still been unable to pay and therefore do not have their final grades from last year. Understand that many promises were made to these families and were honored until the Archdiocese came down on him for what he was doing to help the families and save the school.
Some students now fear the loss of scholarships. Some may even have to repeat last year if they are forced to transfer without final grades.
The school-wide payment increase for parents needing financial assistance is having disastrous affects. Those who last year were paying $200 a month and were under the impression that that would be the cost this year are now being told they must pay $500-700 in order for their child to remain in this Catholic school. The school had an outside agency process some of the families requests and they were certified unable to afford the increases.
On the school site it seems like a massacre (without blood). Kids and their parents crying, friends ripped apart, fear of repeating a grade, and for those who play sports possible scholarship and potential future bright careers going down the drain!
This is just the tip of the iceberg!
We understand that this all needs to be straightened out over time but the children should not be sacrificed in the process.
What is happening here is a sin before God!
Mark 10:14-16 Suffer the little children to come unto me...

See the resignation letter from the Parent Assoc. president below:
Hello Viking Volunteers,
I am hereby submitting my resignation as President of Parent Association for the 2012-2013 school year. For the past three years I have truly enjoyed working on the Board of Parent Association. I've made many friends and adopted many kids. Thank you all for your love and support.
Unfortunately, instead of planning the agenda for my Board Meeting, my speech for Back-to-School Night or planning the theme for Grandparents Day, I have spent the past two weeks attending meeting, after meeting, taking phone call after phone call, to discuss whether or not a CIF, 10-0, Championship football team will have a football season and continuously worrying about whether my son and his teammates' college scholarship dreams are being snatched away from them. The leadership of our administration in this situation has truly been ineffective and unproductive for many families, including mine.
It is time for me to focus my entire attention on my son's and my family's well being.
Kimberly Rodgers
President, Parent Association 2011-2012
For Healing
Lord, You invite all who are burdened to come to You. Allow Your healing hand to heal us. Touch our souls with Your compassion for others. Touch our hearts with Your courage and infinite love for all. Touch our minds with Your wisdom, that our mouths may always proclaim Your praise. Teach us to reach out to You in our need, and help us to lead others to You by our example. Most loving Heart of Jesus, bring us health in body and spirit that we may serve You with all our strength. Touch gently these lives which You have created, now and forever. Amen.
